EDITORIAL - Year of the build

Most years have something we will look back on as the key memory on the year.

Few will not forget the Royal Visit to our city in 2007, or the flood of 2010.

The current year is likely to be remembered as the 'Year of the Build'.

We are seeing buildings pop up all over our city both on the residential side of things, but also in terms of business and industrial.

Take a drive around our city and the signs of growth through building are everywhere.

We can start with Richardson Oilseeds Limited expanding production capabilities at its canola crushing facility on the outskirts of Yorkton.

Announced in June the expansion will increase the capacity of the plant by 25 per cent, said company spokesperson Pat Van Osch. "This will increase the annual plant capacity from 840,000 metric tonnes of canola seed annually to over one million."

In June Council gave the go ahead for the installation of grain bins on Myrtle Avenue to facilitate expansion and growth of a flax processing facility in the city.

In terms of business sector expansion one ongoing concern in recent years has been a shortage of hotel rooms in the city, something which has impacted the community's ability to host some events.

Well that shortage is being dealt with this summer with three hotels currently under construction.

Retail space has been at a premium too, and two strip malls already well under-way, and a third with signage up heralding its arrival soon, will go a long way to addressing that need.

The same facilities will also bring with them several new business ventures expanding what consumers have access to here, in what has become the shopping hub of the region.

The City is recognizing growth is likely to continue and has moved ahead with the Roundhouse Commercial Division adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce office.

Going hand-in-hand with industrial and commercial comes housing.

The issue of housing, or a shortage of affordable housing, has been at the forefront of social concerns for some time now. While affordable remains an issue of debate, there are housing developments all over the city which should help alleviate some of the demand of a city whose population is growing.

When you take into consideration all the nails being pounded this year in the city, development is likely the memorable element of 2012.
