EDITORIAL - Volunteering provides much needed help

Much needed funds are annually raised through various walks, fundraising activities, barbecues and raffles. In just the last few months we have seen thousands of dollars raised for a host of charities, all with great causes.

Much needed funds are annually raised through various walks, fundraising activities, barbecues and raffles. In just the last few months we have seen thousands of dollars raised for a host of charities, all with great causes.

Without volunteers the recent MS Walk, Defeat Depression and last weekend's Give the Gift of Life with funds going to the Kidney Foundation would not have happened.

It takes a community spirit like the city of Yorkton has to keep these fund raising endeavours alive. Volunteers are always in high demand and we have "the best of the best" in our city.

Local service clubs and organizations are involved with worthy projects every week of the year. That's why more volunteers are always in great demand. Habitat for Humanity, The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton, even Parkland Victim Services can use your help.

This Thursday the Special Olympics Parkland Valley management committee is hosting a community event to ensure the continuation of Special Olympics programming in Yorkton. They need help, and lots of it! You can volunteer for a coaching position, program volunteer or become involved with the Executive Committee.

The open house will be held at St. Gerard's Church beginning at 6:00 p.m. More details will be provided on how the Special Olympics benefit local persons with intellectual disabilities and also how you can get involved.

Volunteering your time can be very rewarding and it gives you a sense of self worth. Organizations receive enormous contributions of time, talents and skills. Communities are healthier and more cohesive through active citizen engagement. If you have any spare time head over to St. Gerard's and offer your assistance. It is important for all of us to help those less fortunate when we can.
