EDITORIAL - Take a moment to learn from the season

As we settle down to our seasonal feasts, celebrations and gaiety, we should take pause and consider the things we are celebrating.

As we settle down to our seasonal feasts, celebrations and gaiety, we should take pause and consider the things we are celebrating. The truth of the season is not a man dressed in a red velvet suit handing out gifts with reckless abandon it is something more meaningful and more lasting.

Beyond the commercialism, this season gives each one of us the chance to reconnect with our family, friends and spirituality. It enables us to look at this world as it is and as it should be.

The elusive true meaning of Christmas is in each and every one of us 365 days a year - all we have to do is practice it. Without that spirit of sharing, goodwill and concern, the world becomes a harsh, cold place. It also becomes a place where we care little for the poor, the lonely, the less fortunate - they become merely people existing on the periphery of society.

The challenge of the season is to find a way to carry the true spirit of Christmas beyond the turkey on the table and the gifts under the tree. We must recognize those images of Christmas are sadly beyond the reach of far too many people, just as are our everyday lives.

As we enter the new year, we must strive to remember and maintain the spirit and meaning of Christmas. To live our everyday lives taking those few extra moments to think about our fellow man - giving food to the Salvation Army, donations to charities or simply holding a door for a stranger.
