It seems tough to get back in the swing of things even after a week out of the regular routine of running kids to various activities, including school in the morning. We spent part of the February Break in the Russell area and used the opportunity to visit Asessippi for a day of skiing. The first day went fairly well, with temperatures around -15 or so. The following day not so well, as it was -38 with the windchill. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable time and I highly recommend such an adventure for any young family. If I can do it with an injured foot, then anyone can!
The Yorkton Terriers begin their playoff series on Friday and let's really try to come out in big numbers to show the hockey team that we all should have a great deal of pride in just how much we appreciate their efforts. Teams battle hard all season long for home ice advantage and the crowd can make a difference. SJHL playoffs are a bit of an 'in thing' for folks around Yorkton to do anyway, so hopefully I shouldn't have to harp too much to get you up off the couch and out the door. Just remember to park sensibly at the Gallagher Centre!
TSN ran a piece on Sunday, previewing Canada's 2014 Olympic Hockey Team. I stopped watching their hockey coverage long ago because the overkill on the Leafs, 'sources say', and the trade speculation is too much for me to bear. But, I made the mistake of leaving the tv on after watching curling one night.
If are one of these people that sat by the mobile device, tv set, or radio to wait for an NHL trade on Monday then you really need to get a life.
That's right. I was watching curling. I can't remember ever being this interested in women's curling. Ordinarily, I don't cross the street for women's curling; but I would watch five Scotties matches before I'd ever tune in for an NHL regular season game. As long as Jill Officer remains a member of the Jennifer Jones team, I have to cheer for Jones. I worked with Jill in Brandon and you'd be hard pressed to find a more genuine person. Still, kudos go out to Amber Holland (born in Yorkton) and her team for an excellent week. She made two shots on Sunday night that were so good words can't describe.
I'm not sure if there's such a thing as winter street parking rules or not, but I think there should be. In Yorkton, you won't find a street any wider than Circlebrooke Drive. Still, folks are parking on the street and with the surplus of snow, there is really only room for one lane of traffic on the 100 block. In the summer, you could squeeze four lanes (not recommended you try). I wonder how tight some of the other streets are.
I stumbled across a new website for music lovers looking to get by on something a little less than iTunes. It's called Rdio. You pay a monthly fee and can, pretty much, download whatever you want. The catch is that it's limited to your desktop and mobile device, but does anyone use anything else anymore? To this point, I have 700 songs that I have paid about $40 for. That would be about $800 if I purchased on iTunes. Jango is a free jukebox site worth checking out and GrooveShark is pretty cool too.
Speaking of music, there is a concert in Regina on March 9th that any hard rocker should be sure to catch. Buckcherry and Papa Roach headline a bill that also includes up and comers My Darkest Days and Bleeker Ridge. It's my understanding Bleeker Ridge was just in Yorkton and they are a pretty well kept secret. I predict they'll be the most entertaining of the four acts. My Darkest Days' biggest hit is the controversial 'Porn Star Dancing' which features our lead singing friend from Nickelback.
