YRHS Gr. 9 student Matthijs Wenning leads the pack during his 3000-metre distance relay. Wenning lapped several of his competitors during the race and wound up bringing home three gold medals, the first to do so since the 1980s.

The Yorkton Regional High School track team had another strong showing at the 2010 provincial track meet held recently in Moose Jaw.

Duane Miller, co-coach and advisor of the YRHS runners, said it was another example of good some of the local athletes have become and with a few students performing to expectations as usual, there was one who really made a name for himself.

Matthijs Wenning is a Gr. 9 student at the YRHS who won three gold medals as previously reported in last week's Yorkton This Week, had a phenomenal showing in his first year of high school.

Miller said it's guys like that that will likely be one to watch in the sport of track and field. He also added that with Wenning being so young and fresh in high school athletics, it's hard foranyone to have expectations for him.

"I don't think you can have expectations (for him," said Miller of Wenning's triple gold medal performance, his first performance at the high school level. Wenning's medal count for the two day event included: gold in the 800-metre, gold in the 1500-metre, and gold in the 3000-metre distance runs.

Miller said the results show what a talented runner Wenning has already become."The difference in those races shows the quality of him as an athlete."

Wenning's winnings all came in the longest possibly races he can participate in.

Miller said Wenning lapped some of his competitors in the 3000-metre and Wenning didn't seem surprised at his own accomplishments.

"He was less nervous then he thought he'd be," observed Miller, who said it was a fantastic two days of racing.

"I am very pleased (with this). It was a fantastic effort. Track and field has definitely been on a roll."
