It was another good day for Brendon Weber and another good day for the Yorkton Gridders when the Regina Warriors paid one last visit to Kinsmen Century Field Saturday morning in the City of Yorkton.
The Gridders closed out their home schedule with a 32-8 win as Weber led the way again with another touchdown-fest.
It didn't start out easy as Regina opened up a 6-0 lead following a Yorkton turnover. Jason Farrell, head coach of the Gridders blamed that on "suspect" tackling as the "defence sputtered" in the early going."Momentum's a tough thing to get and it's a tough thing to hold on to."
Farrell said they're going to need as much of it as they can get when they go up against one of the league's top three teams, the Wolverines, the Mustangs and the Razorbacks. In an early match in the season, the Yorkton Gridders played the Wolverines and experience a type of pass attack they've likely only seen on the television set. Farrell said again that they've been working on a defence against that pass attack and that the Warriors showed a similiar ability to throw it.
"Absolutely," he said when questioned. "After that game, you spend the whole week working on the pass. This team (the Warriors) three the ball a bit (too)."
The Wolverines are the lone team this season to put up more points on the scoreboard than the Gridders.Farrell said he's looking forward to a rematch with them but said the Warriors weren't a team to be taken lightly either, regardless of the numbers on the scoreboard Saturday morning.
"They were resilient."
Weber had another outstanding game for the PeeWee Gridders, made several huge catches and added to his touchdown count on the season.
"It's a big improvement (from last season)," he said after the game. "It's something opposite."
He added that it's a much different feeling to be on the winning side of the scoreboard five out of six games this season and admitted that even for him it's a little hard to believe.
"It is actually surprising."
The football team is now finished with the home portion of their schedule. They will play out the rest of the season in Regina, including a stop on the professional turf of Mosaic Stadium, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m., when they take on the 3-2 Golden Hawks.
