The Sacred Heart High School senior girls volleyball team traveled to Regina this past weekend to take part in the 16-team University of Regina Autumn Classic.
Due to numerous player conflicts, the Saints were very short handed on Friday with only seven players. Sacred Heart began the tournament against Wakaw losing 17-25 and 22-25, then dropping another close match 23- 25 and 19-25.
The third match of the night was against Assiniboia, where the Saints played very well winning two straight 25-15 and 26-16 and finishing third in the Friday pool.
Saturday morning began with a new pool and an additional two more players for the Saints. The first match was against a strong Moose Jaw Peacock team who defeated Sacred Heart 16-25 and 18-25 then Russell Manitoba won two straight 17-25 and 14-25.
In the final pool match, the Lady Saints rallied to defeated Thom Collegiate of Regina 25-10 and 25-14 which again placed the Saints in third in their pool.
In the playoff round, Sacred Heart faced Foam Lake for a very closely fought match. Foam Lake took the first game 21- 25.
In the second game, the Saints fought back going point for point to win 27-25 to force a third game. The deciding game was another see saw battle with neither team taking a lead, but in the end Foam Lake won 12-15.
The girls then faced Rocanville in another hard fought match. SHHS took game one 25-21 and game two 25 - 14 which gave the Lady Saints an 11th place finish out of the 16 teams competing.
Coach Perry Enns said he was very happy with the play of his team.
"We showed a lot of improvement from our first tournament last weekend. It was tough missing so many players; we had two or three people playing positions they never have played before.
Kelsey Greene, the shortest player on the team was the starting middle in the final three matches. "Kelsey played exceptionally well, recording several kills which is not easy for someone of her height to do at that position.
Kyra Brown also played very well this weekend; she played several different positions and led the team in Back Row attacks, said Enns.
The Saints will travel back to Regina this coming weekend to take part in the Mega Volley tournament.
