YORKTON - An old idea is being brought back, and the Yorkton Terriers will be the beneficiaries.
A group has launched Harvest for Hockey, a community initiative to support the Junior Hockey Club.
A group of local farmers and businesses have come together in support of the team, pledging 100 acres of land which will be farmed and profits donated directly to the Terriers, explained initiative spokesperson Geoff Brand.
The inputs for the crop, fertilizer, chemicals, seed, etc., are being donated by various businesses, and supported by others, said Brand.
The project will see volunteers plant 100 acres of land on Highway #9 North to canola with inputs donated from various businesses in the agriculture sector, explained Brand, adding if Mother Nature cooperates the canola should offer the best returns in the fall.
The profits will go to the team to use as required, he added.
Brand noted even for those who may not be huge hockey fans the Terriers are still an important part of the community with home games being a place to gather and meet friends.
“It’s a gathering place in the community,” he said of games, adding “I'm not worried about an SJHL championship I just want to make sure the team is here for the community.”
