Bulldogs close out the season with a victory

The Yorkton Bulldogs have had a rough season leading up to Saturday's finale at Kinsmen Arena but it came to an end the way coach Joe Choptuik was hoping it would.

Hosting the Assiniboia Attack at Kinsmen Arena, Yorkton brought their season to an end in good fashion with a 10-3 thumping of the Attack one last time in front of their home supporters.

Yorkton started off the game in good fashion too, having jumped out to an early lead in the opening period, beating the Attack netminder for four goals.

The Attack got one back but Choptuik said after the game he expected more against the one club in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League that had yet to win a game going into Yorkton that night.

"I still think we can play better," he said following a game where the team scored four goals in each of the first two period.

"I was expecting a lot more out of our guys."

He added that even though the numbers on the scoreboard were in his team's favour, the totals in shots on goal might not have been.

The victory puts the Bulldogs into a final record of 2-8 for four points in the PGLL standings, tied with the Estevan Big Dogs for fifth place.

Assiniboia remained the league's only team without a win to their credit, while the Regina Riot and Prince Albert Predators finished the league play with 17 points apiece.

The 2010 PGLL playoffs take place in the second week of July in Saskatoon. The top four teams in the league will go for the Tier I title while the bottom 5-9 will fight for Tier II honours.

Yorkton is currently the defending Tier II champions two years in a row and Choptuik said a third straight title will depend on how badly they want the three-peat. "It's all up to the guys but I think we have a pretty good chance. We're shooting for the Tier II title."
