In the lone hockey game played in Yorkton over the weekend, the Yorkton Terrier AA Bantam hockey team played Regina at the Kinsmen Arena on Friday.
Head coach Damon Kustra was not happy the way his team played.
"It wasn't our best effort of the season," he said outside the team's dressing room after giving his team a bit of a talk following a 5-1 loss thrown at them in their own building.
Yorkton's Darcy Kayseas was the lone goalscorer in the game. Korwin Shewchuk and Adam Neibrandt drew the assists. The loss came several days after goaltender Rylan Palchewich pitched a shutout in the final game of a tournament Yorkton took part in at the Melville Stadium. Yorkton came away with a win and two losses, but the victory likely made the losses at Melville sting a little less.
Kustra said a 7-0 beating of Lumsden was one of the team's better outings of the short season and it was likely something the locals were hoping to build upon this past weekend against the Regina Oilers.
"It was the best game," notes Kustra. "The defence really jumped up."
It was one of those games when Yorkton had to make no adjustments and played their game to the point where Lumsden had to play catch-up all day long.
"They played right into our hands," he said.
It marked a memorable occasion for first-year Bantam netminder Palchewich, who faced 15 shots that game.
"He was very steady," noted Kustra.
In the first game, they lost to the host club, 9-5, said Kustra, Yorkton's head coach. In game two, they dropped an 8-2 decision to Prince Albert before responding with a 7-0 win over Lumsden.
