YORKTON - The Yorkton Terriers want to upgrade the team’s dressing room, trainer’s room and coach’s office.
And Monday team representatives appeared at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council asking for the city to fund 50 per cent of the work ($80,000).
Jeff Sperling, one of the presenters, said when, as a fan and now player parent, he first looked at the dressing rooms the reaction was one of disgust.
As it is, facilities are so bad Sperling said they are a liability when it comes to recruiting players.
The facilities, he said, require a complete redo, including new lockers, bathroom fixtures and ventilation for the skate sharpener.
Sperling said what is something of a phase one has an estimated cost of $140,000, and they hope the city will provide $80K.
Councillor Ken Chyz was quick to support the plan.
“I 100 per cent agree something has to be done there,” he said.
The fact the proposal being put forward by the Terriers “improves one of our (city) facilities for 50 cent dollars, I’d totally be in favour,” said Chyz.
Coun. Darcy Zaharia called the condition of Terrier facilities “a very bad situation” where something needed to be done.
“I’m fully behind it,” said Coun. Chris Wyatt, adding when the last big renovation to the Gallagher Centre was undertaken “it was missed 20 years ago.”
Mayor Mitch Hippsley echoed the poor condition and agreed something should have been done already.
The request was left with administration to look for dollars as they were not allocated in the 2023 budget.
