聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Sturgis School Community Council hosted its annual general meeting that focused discussions on the consolidation of the two schools.
聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The meeting was chaired by Janice Beatty, chairperson for School Community Council, on November 24.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 "The annual meeting focused on regular business and election of officers," said Beatty. "We discussed the continuance of renovations to the high school followed by a symposium held in Kamsack on November 29.
鈥淲e had reports from the Sturgis Elementary and high schools that focused on the student-led conference, sports teams鈥 activities, career fair, the elementary Christmas concert scheduled for December 17 and the high school鈥檚 Christmas dinner,鈥 Beatty said. 鈥淭he next big meeting we will have will be on January 12 when we will focus on the transitioning stage into the high school."
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The new executive committee is comprised of: Janice Beatty, chairperson; Amanda Masley, vice-chairperson, and Stacey Boychuk, secretary and treasurer. School liaisons are Brad Cameron, Carla Olson and Kelsey Seerey. Other members of the School Community Council are Ryan Coleman, Cynthia Vallevand, Lisa Serdachny, Kirsten Peterson and Stacey Anaka.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The open meeting that followed the annual general meeting focused on the school's renovations and the consolidation of the elementary and high schools.
Alisa Leidl, a superintendent of the Good Spirit School Division, and Therese Korol, building facilities manager, were in attendance to guide and answer questions.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 "The original concept of consolidation of the schools occurred when the School Community Council met with the Good Spirit School Division on June 9," said Beatty. "We heard the proposal and felt it was in the students鈥 best interest and decided to put it before an open meeting on June 20. At that point the community was given more information. We received positive feedback during that meeting and the School Community Council met after the meeting to pass a motion to consolidate the two schools."
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 "With input from staff, a floor plan was drawn-up and the renovations began in the high school," she said. "There are still many things to consider and the School Community Council has selected to focus on these issues at this time which include playground and its location, teacher and student parking issues, bus loading and unloading, and a school name.鈥
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The division has indicated that the Sturgis Elementary old school building will not be sold quickly and is ensuring that there is a possibility of local groups that would rent out certain rooms in the building, Beatty said.
