Saskatoon-wide green cart collection starts May 1

The monthly average utility fee for the green cart program is $6.73, calculated at a rate of $0.2212 per day.

SASKATOON — The City of Saskatoon has announced that green cart collection will begin on Monday, May 1, for all households with rollout garbage and recycling carts.

The green cart collection will be biweekly and alternate with the black cart collection, so residents are advised to check their collection calendar for details. Information on collection dates can also be found on the city's website or by downloading the Saskatoon Waste Wizard app.

Loraas, a waste management company, has finalized an agreement to accept organic waste materials at its facility located north of Saskatoon. This move is part of the contingency plan outlined in the green cart contract between the City and Green Prairie Environmental (GPE).

Residents are reminded to bring in their kitchen pails and start scraping their plates, as the green cart can accept all food waste, including bones and eggshells and most yard waste.

By diverting organic waste from landfills and creating compost instead, the need for a new landfill can be delayed, and the environment can be protected.

The green cart program comes with a new fee called Organics Charge, which will be included on residents' utility bills. The monthly average utility fee for the green cart program is $6.73, calculated at a rate of $0.2212 per day.

The amount on the bill may vary depending on the number of days in the month. The monthly fee covers the collection of food and yard waste from residents' homes, sorting and processing of material, providing cart maintenance and education, bylaw and program support.

Residents eligible for the green cart program but have not received their green cart or kitchen pail are advised to contact Corporate Revenue at 306-975-2400. For more, information about the green cart program, please visit the city's website at .
