Saskatoon firefighters use backhoe in structure fire

The structure's occupants were temporarily housed.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department required the assistance of a backhoe to help extinguish a structure fire in the 1500 Block of 7th Avenue North on Thursday, Nov. 17.

SFD dispatch received a report of the fire at 11:20 a.m. where they dispatched three fire engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief.

Incoming fire crews were assigned their tactical duties as heavy smoke was showing on the structure, which was fully involved in the fire.

Utility companies were also on the scene to shut down all utilities for everyone’s safety at the location of the structure fire.

SFD firefighters on the scene had to use two fire hydrants to ensure enough water supply to their fire apparatus and hose lines.

SFD crews needed a backhoe to pull the structure apart after portions of the structure began collapsing, starting with the rear porch, as heavy flames can be seen on the roof.

A backhoe was needed to support fire crews as it pulled apart portions of the structure that were difficult to reach by SFD’s hose lines. The fire was declared under control at 4:04 p.m.

Fire crews continued extinguishing hot spots, and at 6:40 p.m., the scene was turned over to the fire investigator.

The fire investigator, however, will not conduct a scene examination as the structure was a complete loss. The cause and origin of the fire are not known.

The damage is estimated to be $350,000, and there were no injuries to the occupants or firefighters due to the fire.

The occupants of the structure, which has been secured with fencing, have been temporarily rehoused until they find permanent housing.

If you are walking or driving in this area, use caution as the water is freezing on the city streets and sidewalks. Sanding trucks have been in the area and laid sand down.
