聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 After a farmer聽was shot near聽Rama on July 27, 2010, four people came to his rescue, even though there was a risk of being shot themselves, said a press release.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 聽Dianne and Lorne Matsalla and Geraldine and Phillip Shewchuk, all of Rama, who were recognized for their bravery, were among 43 people honoured for their courage by Gov.-Gen. David Johnston in Ottawa Friday morning, said information on the website of the Governor-General.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 In the Rama case, the victim, Greg Bugera, had been working in a field聽near聽Rama in 2010 when an assailant Rodney Hanishewskisuddenly fired his rifle at him.聽According to a summary of the incident provided by the Governor General's office, the Matsallas and the Shewchuks quickly drove out to the victim's location.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e were all very honoured to be presented such an amazing award,鈥 said Phillip Shewchuk. 鈥淲e never thought of putting our own lives at risk. We knew we had to help Greg.
聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 鈥淚t all started when Lorne Matsalla received a chilling phone call that Greg had been shot,鈥 Shewchuk said. 鈥淗is whereabouts were not known as his phone call was cut short.
聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 鈥淲e jumped into action and found Greg hiding on the next quarter over. It was a sight I will never forget. He was covered in blood. We all will never forget that day,鈥 said Shewchuk.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淕etting the award was a experience of a lifetime and to be able to shake hands and have the Governor General give us each a hug was amazing,鈥 he said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 "Unaware of the shooter's whereabouts and at risk of being shot themselves, they tracked down the victim, helped him into one of the vehicles and drove him to safety," the summary said.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 A man who turned out to be a neighbour of the victim with a grudge over a land dispute was later arrested.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Court heard the accused, Rodney Hanishewski, fired multiple shots, hitting the victim in the shoulder. 聽
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Hanishewski pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted murder and was sentenced to nine years at the Regional Psychiatric Centre.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The four Saskatchewan rescuers received the medal of bravery in recognition of bravery in hazardous circumstances.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Decorations for bravery recognize people who risked their lives to try to save or protect another. The decorations were created by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1972.
