PREECEVILLE -The Preeceville Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 188, presented students at the Preeceville School with certificates for their winning entries in the Remembrance Day Poster and Literary contest.
Preeceville School students were presented awards for black and white and colour posters, as well as junior and intermediate literacy on Nov. 28. Bill Lesko, president of the Preeceville Legion branch, accompanied by Blaine Medlang, poppy chairperson and Bev Forshner, Legion member, made the presentation to the winners at the school.
The first to third winners, in order, in the junior coloured poster category were: Sage Ward, Rebecca Spray and Macy Balawyder.
In the junior black-and-white poster category, the first to third winners, in order, were: Charlotte Newton, Sophie Petras, and Blakely Firman.
In the intermediate coloured poster category, Kyla Scheller placed first and there were no other winners.
In the black-and-white intermediate poster category, Ashley Scott placed first and Kyla Scheller placed second. There was no third place winner.
Maicey Scheller won first in the senior black-and-white poster category.
"Each year, in November, the Royal Canadian Legion launches its Poster and Literary Contest," said William Lesko, president of the Preeceville Legion. “It is very important that we continue promoting the contest and encourage our youth to participate. It is a reminder to remember those who fought for our freedom and to continue honouring their memory through the Remembrance Day poster, poem and literacy contest,” said Lesko.
Contest categories were open to those in the Preeceville School from Grades 1 to 12.
Prizes range from a certificate all the way to $1,000 first prize at the national level.
Students were challenged to exercise their creativity and submit a poster on the theme of Remembrance in either colour or black and white.
For the literary contest, students were challenged to exercise their creativity and write an essay and/or poem on the theme of Remembrance.
The top winner in each category was forwarded to district level.
