Kamsack Legion branch celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2016

The Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion plans to be much more visible during 2016, which is the branch鈥檚 90 th anniversary.

聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion plans to be much more visible during 2016, which is the branch鈥檚 90th anniversary.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e are well into 2016 and our new executive has had its first meeting,鈥 said Jim Woodward, president, adding that many activities for the year have already been planned.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Serving on the executive committee with Woodward are: Sharon Rudy, second vice-president; Robert Boudreau, third vice-president; Judy Green, secretary; John Adamyk, treasurer; Barry Golay, service officer; Stephen Ruten, chaplain, and Diana Belovanoff and Vera Kuzma, trustees. Audrey Girling, Jamie Snyder, Francis MacIsaac and Cindi Evans (appointed) are executive members at large. Executive positions not filled are: past president, first vice-president and sergeant-at-arms.

鈥淲e have taken steps to assist Kerri Lindsay in starting up a bagpipe school,鈥 Woodward said. 鈥淭he Kamsack Legion will be working with the Kamsack volunteer fire fighters to bring the 鈥淐hase the Ace鈥 program to the community; we have started another 50/50 draw and there are plans in the works to bring on a few other events.鈥

The date of May 15 has been set for the dedication ceremony for the HMCS Kamsack Memorial, he said. After struggling with the Canadian dollar the decision was made to ensure the second phase of our memorial brick project would be completed before Decoration Day in June.

鈥淥ur commitment to assisting the Kamsack Air Cadets with a level of sponsorship remains in place for another year.鈥

Many local awards were given out to the school students for their involvement in the annual poster and poem contest for Remembrance week, he said. Many are encouraged to play an active part again this year.

鈥淭he Kamsack Legion thanks our community for its continued support and looks forward to seeing many at upcoming special events,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ver the last year, we were pleased to have had our hall rented by other service groups and again look forward to supporting them in the future.

鈥淲e even had our first wedding and baby shower since our main floor was updated, plus a couple funerals,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e have a rental structure for a venue that can accommodate almost any medium-sized event on a first-come, first-serve basis.
