Update: Fire in a suite at the Lighthouse

No residents will be displaced as a result of this incident

SASKATOON — Update 1:18 p.m.: After a more thorough evaluation of the fire scene, damage to the suite is estimated to be closer to $40,000.

The building’s sprinkler system extinguished a small fire that resulted in significant water damage to the suite’s ceiling tiles.

No residents will be displaced as a result of this incident. The Lighthouse will accommodate the occupant of the damaged suite.

Clean-up in the suite is currently underway. The suite is expected to be fit for occupancy by early next week.

Background: The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out in one of the suites at the Lighthouse early Friday morning.

The SFD Communications Centre received the report at 3:19 a.m. and immediately dispatched to the scene were three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit, and the Battalion Chief.

Occupants from the third floor of the building were being evacuated when fire crews arrived at the scene. Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and proceeded to the third floor.

A fire was identified in a suite with heavy smoke but low heat. The sprinkler system had activated and kept the fire in a small state.

Fire crews finished extinguishing the fire and the fire damage was contained inside the suite. No injuries to civilians or firefighters resulted from this fire

At least 15 suites were affected, and water had already been drained. Water damage is predominantly to ceiling tiles, and firefighters assisted with resetting the fire alarm system.

A Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene and will attend to ensure the fire and water protection systems are serviced and fully functional. The Fire Investigator determined the cause was accidental due to improper disposal of smoking material.
