PREECEVILLE - The SPE (Sturgis, Preeceville, Endeavour) Family Resource Centre has been meeting the needs of children, youth, and families in the communities of Sturgis, Preeceville, and Endeavour for almost 30 years.

“The centre runs programs that promote literacy, provide family support, and encourage the strengthening of our communities,” said Karolyn Kosheluk, program coordinator.

The programs focus on two main components: early childhood development and family enrichment.

The early childhood development component consists of weekly drop-in and play sessions in both Preeceville and Sturgis. This programming targets children ages six years and younger and their caregivers. It runs on Wednesdays in Preeceville and Tuesdays in Sturgis.

The Sturgis program is located in the Sturgis Multi-Complex and the Preeceville program is located at the new Preeceville Regional Library location in the Town of Preeceville Administration building.

The Drop In-and-Play is free of charge and the sessions provide a much-needed opportunity for both caregivers and children to socialize and also participate in a variety of activities such as games, stories, simple crafts, literacy activities, and a healthy snack.

The Family Enrichment component consists of about one activity per month that encourages families in the areas of literacy, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. Currently, there is also a Cooking with Kids program held in Sturgis at the Grace United Church hall. Young children and their caregivers are involved with the preparation of a complete meal in the Cooking with Kids program. They get to experience foods they might not usually have the opportunity to eat, stated Kosheluk.
