In spite of there not having been a curling team assembled at the Canora Composite School in six years, a CCS foursome is wearing gold medals won at the District competition.

At the district junior mixed curling bonspiel held at Sturgis January 29 and 30, the CCS team won the gold medal after having played five games in the double-knockout competition.

On the team of players in grades 6 to 9 which was coached by Sharon Ripa, are: Brandon Zuravloff, skip; Ally Sleeva, third; Cody Bazarski, second, and Cassidy Zuravloff, lead.

On the Friday the team played Sturgis, Preeceville and Esterhazy, and won all three of its games, Ripa said last week. On Saturday in the finals, Canora met Sturgis and lost the game, which meant playing Sturgis again in the afternoon, and this time Canora won.

The Sturgis team won silver, and Esterhazy, bronze. Also competing were teams from Norquay, Saltcoats and Springside.

Ripa, who had begun working with the CCS students last year, said she had done so after having felt a bit exasperated over there not being a team at the school. She said she wanted to thank the Canora Community Curling Cub for allowing practice time through the season.
