'Anna the Garlic Farmer: Just Be Yourself’ is a new chidren's book from Anna Schaab.

YORKTON - Anna Schaab has become rather well-known locally as the garlic lady because she has grown the popular bulbs and marketed them from her farm near the city for years.

But who would have expected that growing garlic would take Schaab down the path of becoming a children’s author.

Yet, that is what has happened as Schaab has written and released ‘Anna the Garlic Farmer: Just Be Yourself’.

The book is for an audience ages two-to-seven, but Schaab said she didn’t find writing for a younger audience difficult at all.

“I’m a kid at heart,” she told Yorkton This Week.

They say inspiration comes from some unusual places, and that seems to fit in the case of what inspired Schaab to tackle the book.

“This book was inspired by being interviewed by Jenn Sharp, author of Flat Out Delicious,” said Schaab. “Jenn contacted us last season as Halter Media, was filming episodes for the TV series ‘Flat Out Foods’, and Jenn thought we’d be a good fit.

“I was apprehensive in the beginning to accept her invitation, but Jenn was so great and excited to share our story, that Darrel and I slowly agreed to do the interview.

“The children’s book was how I felt leading up to the interview.

“Plus, something I’m positive everyone, children or adults can relate to -- the feeling of trying to be someone you aren’t, only wanting to fit in.”

Schaab said writing the book also fit with what she was trained to do, educate.

“My background is in education, and I always tried to inspire my students to be themselves, and be proud of who they are,” she said.

“. . . I think my goal was to combine my love of teaching with my passion of growing food, but have a story that teaches something in a light and fun way.”

The book has been a creation of discovery for the author.

”I had no idea what to expect, but just knew I wanted to try,” she said. “If I had failed, at least I had the courage to do it.

“So the book exceeded all my expectations and my publisher Julianne (with FriesenPress), was amazing to work with. She made every step seem like a possible adventure.”

The reaction to the book has so far been amazing, said the author, starting with holding the first book.

“I can’t believe this is real,” offered Schaab.

Others have liked it too, with the author terming it “overwhelming, with positive remarks, which I am so grateful and deeply humbled.”

And new ideas are already percolating for more books.

“Anna the garlic farmer has many, many stories that she wants to share -- all true experiences,” said Schaab.
