SASKATOON — Wanuskewin Heritage Park will have two new shows featuring its Permanent Collection and Exploring CQ, which consist of pieces exploring the longstanding relationship between Indigenous people and horses.

The pieces depict the strong kinship between horses and Indigenous people and their shared history of being forced out of their lands and forced into subservience.

The pieces show images often depicted in Hollywood Western films, which strengthen the settler narrative of the warrior on horseback.

This exhibition brings the question of representation versus reality into play and will make visitors question the history they thought they knew.

The show is curated by Olivia Kristoff and will feature works by local artists Henry Beaudry, Carol Grigg and Michael Lonechild.

The exhibit will run from March to June at Wanuskewin’s East Gallery. The Heritage Park is open from Tuesdays to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Interpretive Centre will also host “Exploring CQ: A Journey Through the 10 Cultural Clusters” created by Cultural Intelligence Facilitator Wilbur Sargunaraj.

The exhibit explores cultural intelligence and sets up interesting questions for viewers to answer on their own.

Cultural Intelligence, or CQ, is an academically recognized way of assessing and improving effectiveness in culturally diverse situations.

The exhibit features photographs taken by Sargunaraj during his journeys to different countries within the cultural clusters.

The photos are paired with information panels explaining CQ, the four CQ capabilities, the 10 cultural clusters and the 10 cultural values.
