The number of people employed in the Yorkton/Melville area is less than it was one year ago.
According to Statistics Canada, in February 2021, the area saw 35,500 people employed compared to 39,400 in February 2020.
Despite the decrease of 3,900, the unemployment rate remains similar as it has only risen by 0.1 per cent from 5.5 to 5.6 this year, the lowest in the province, and one of the lowest in all of Canada. This is due to the area seeing a decrease of over 4,000 people in the labour force and the employment rate dipping from 62.3 to 57.2 this year.
Both Saskatchewan and Canada are in a similar situation as the province's labour force has decreased 16,400, with Canada's decreasing by 47,700 from February of last year to this year. However, both the province and the nation differ from the area as they saw their unemployment rate jump significantly, with Saskatchewan seeing an increase of 1.6 per cent, and Canada seeing an increase of 3.1 per cent.
