Looking for something a little different for New Year’s Eve?
How about a Murder Mystery Dinner with a 1920s theme?
If that sounds like just the way to welcome in 2020 you will want to be among those to ‘party like Jay Gatsby’ and those hoping to ‘solve a mystery like Sherlock Holmes’ at the Comfort Inn in Yorkton Tuesday evening.
The evening is being offered by Level Up Escapes, a business in its first year of operation out of Indian Head.
“I’ve been selling tickets since before Christmas,” offered Mari Grobler, a former Yorkton resident, and the force behind the company that focuses on mystery dinners and escape room events.
The event, which will be a rather intimate one with 20 tickets being sold, is a highly participatory one for those attending.
“You will be a character in the murder mystery,” explained Grobler.
So those attending are encouraged to dress up like it’s the 1920s so they fit in with the atmosphere of the dinner.
The meeting rooms at Comfort Inn will be decorated as a 1920s speakeasy, said Grobler.
When arriving, one does not just walk into a speakeasy, so having a ticket won’t quite get you in the door.
“You’ll have to search for the password,” said Grobler, adding there will be a small taste of doing some puzzling, and working with a riddle, to learn the secret words.
Once inside, there will be food, drink and mingling “so people get comfortable with their characters,” said Grobler.
And, then the fun begins.
“There will be a murder,” said Grobler, with the challenge that it must “be solved by midnight.”
Grobler said she got started in providing such fare one night watching a movie called ‘Game night’. She said she had the idea to hold her own game night, but with escape room elements and a murder taking place.
From there the idea sprouted, and she has been hosting such events in various locales in the province from Tisdale to Regina throughout 2019.
Grobler often starts with a mystery available from various sources, to which she adds in a dose of humour, and usually some escape room elements to make her offerings somewhat unique.
Anyone interested in a ticket to the Yorkton event have until 6 p.m. Dec. 29, to call and reserve at 306-620-9727. People interested in having an event held in their community can call the same number or look for Level Up Escapes on Facebook.
