What鈥檚 going on at the Yorkton Armoury? Brett Kuzek, troop commander for 64 Battery, 10 Field Artillery Regiment, the reserve unit based at the Armoury, knows that many people don鈥檛 know, and that鈥檚 the goal of the annual open house, held Oct. 5. It opens the doors and displays them to the public, letting the community at large know what the army reserves are all about.

鈥淚t was an initiative set out to basically show us to the public. There are people within our community that are a part of the Canadian armed forces, and it鈥檚 surprising how little is known about us.鈥

Part of a larger Canadian Armed Forces initiative to promote the army reserves, the goal of the open house is to promote and inform. Kuzek said that they have a long history in Yorkton, but he regularly talks to people who don鈥檛 even know that the army reserves exist.

鈥淥ur unit is coming on 100 years here, and to me it is surprising how little is known about us.鈥

The goal is also to show that they are a part of the community, along with recruiting more people who might be interested in signing up.

鈥淎 lot of these guys, they do it as a part-time job. This isn鈥檛 what they do as a living, they do it as a hobby... These are teachers, tradesman, administrators, they鈥檙e members of the community, not just members of the Canadian Armed Forces,鈥 Kuzek said.

It鈥檚 a busy regiment, and training involves different objectives, Kuzek explained.

鈥淚t greatly varies, it all depends on what is our upcoming objective and what we hope to achieve.鈥
