Arbor Week marked by Saltcoats tree planting

With May 17-24 recently declared Arbor Week in the province by Dustin Duncan, Minister of the Environment, and May 22, specifically as Arbor Day this week is an ideal time to plant some trees.

With May 17-24 recently declared Arbor Week in the province by Dustin Duncan, Minister of the Environment, and May 22, specifically as Arbor Day this week is an ideal time to plant some trees.

That is exactly what members of the Saltcoats Beautification Committee, a committee of the Town did. The group planted 100 trees along town property in Saltcoats Ìýnear the school and the skating rink.

The group chose to plant fast growing Sundancer poplar and a row of spruce trees.Ìý

Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a newspaperman, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted. The ideas and the observance of the special day spread quickly through North America and to many other parts of the globe.
