YORKTON - ZARQA is a Saskatchewan made film about a flawed Muslim woman who is trying to create a massive global following for her company Zarqish Delights.

It is among the finalists for the Best of Sask Award at the Yorkton Film Festival.

“I wanted to act eventually and started with stand-up first thinking I’d do that for a few years, then COVID hit and all the venues for stand-up shut down,” said Zarqa Nawaz of the film’s creation.

“The opportunity for making the show came up via the Independent Production Fund. I decided to move into acting faster than originally anticipated. It was a risk but worth it in the end.”

Still Nawaz said it was not always an easy process.

“I was new to acting and that for me was the biggest hurdle. But it’s good that I was responsible for the editing,” she noted.

The film shines in part because of where it was created, according to Nawaz.

“The series showcases Saskatchewan in terms of production talent. We can make anything here, including comedy,” she said.

It helps when you get a Best of Sask nomination in terms of validating the effort too.

“I feel more confident and sure that people will enjoy the series,” said Nawaz.

In general terms Nawaz said she was “was thrilled” being a YFF finalist.

“It means so much to be recognized in Saskatchewan especially since it was shot and produced in Saskatchewan,” she said.

“It’s been up for a bunch of awards but this one means the most to me.

“It’s a huge recognition and will help promote the series internationally. Yorkton is one of the most important and prestigious festivals in the country and being recognized is huge. It helps bring more attention to the series.
