KAMSACK — The fifth Annual Wheelchair Curling Funspiel was hosted at the Broda SportsPlex in Kamsack, drawing in 12 teams of around four individuals each. The Jan. 5 - 6 event promoted camaraderie and fun on the curling rink ice.
Participants engaged in a three-game minimum tournament, with a "Shoot to the Button Contest" and the chance to win a Liquor Basket also being included. One notable aspect of the Wheelchair Curling Funspiel is that no prior curling skill is required, opening the doors for individuals of all abilities and ages to participate in the competition.
Contrary to traditional curling, where sweeping is a crucial element, the Wheelchair Curling Funspiel involves all throwing being done in a wheelchair, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the game. The emphasis on inclusivity was highlighted by the event organizers, who made it clear that participants did not need to be permanently in a wheelchair to take part in the event.
Throughout the weekend, spectators witnessed spirited matches and observed the positive and supportive atmosphere among the participants. The 12 teams, each with unique dynamics, showcased the diverse group of individuals who came together to enjoy the sport.
