KAMSACK - It was Wednesday, September 8 when the Victoria School in Kamsack hosted a free, late-afternoon family barbecue event that celebrated the beginning of a new school year, Family Literacy Day, and accepted donations for the annual Terry Fox Run.
Principal Karie Thomas described the event as “an opportunity for parents and guardians to get to know the staff in a relaxed and friendly setting.”
Many teachers and support staff were spotted mingling with students and families in the courtyard at the back of the school. The smell of burgers on the grill wafted throughout the busy playground as dozens of families lined up to share in the late summer feast.
In addition to good food and drink, the event served as an opportunity to raise funds for the annual Terry Fox Run by bringing empty cans and bottles, and also celebrate Family Literacy Day. Posters were on display at a number of stations throughout the playground, and families were encouraged to visit each one and enjoy a story.
A new and improved courtyard garden hosted a photo backdrop where families were invited to pose on a bench and have a free family portrait taken by support staff members.
