Senior Cote Selects start season strong at home, weak away

The Cote Selects started their 2024-25 Saskatchewan East Hockey League season defeating Preeceville 11-1, then lost against Esterhazy 7-5 and Langenburg 10-2.

COTE FIRST NATION — The Cote Selects started their 2024-25 Saskatchewan East Hockey League season strong at home, but then faced two losses away.

Vs. Preeceville

For their first game of the season, played at home against the Preeceville Pats on Nov. 8, the Selects won 11-1.

Brennan Watson scored the first Cote goal of the season with 16:46 left on the clock in the first period, followed by Chris Cochrane at 15:39 and Matt Langan at 4:26. Noah Tonn of the Pats then took advantage of a power play to score their only goal of the night at 2:36. Watson ended the period with one more goal at 1:26, scored during a power play.

In the second period, Tristan Keshane scored at 13:09, Ron Cote at 12:52 and Kailum Gervais at 4:04.

Watson took advantage of a power play early in the third period to score at 16:18. The next goal took place towards the end of the game, with Ron Cote scoring at 3:42 during a power play. Chris Cochrane scored at 2:51 and Kailum Gervais ended the night for the Selects with their 11th goal at 2:27.

Vs. Esterhazy

The Selects’ first road outing was a close, back-and-forth game, but Esterhazy Flyers managed to score two goals in the end to defeat Cote 7-5.

Cote scored early into the Nov. 15 away game, with Konrad Mckay scoring with 18:17 left on the clock in the first period. Trey Bear of the Flyers then delivered Esterhazy’s first response, scoring a power play goal at 8:36. Esterhazy’s Karl Messinbird then scored at 2:20, followed by a goal by Cote’s Mckay at 1:51. The Flyers ended the period with a goal by Jayden Isaac with 20 second left.

Tristan Keshane then tied the game early in the second period at 17:04. The tie was broken with the Flyer’s Parker Johnson scoring at 1:36.

Brennan Watson then took advantage of a power play with a goal 31 seconds into the third period, tying the game for Cote. Eli Halcrow of the Flyers scored Esterhazy’s fifth goal at 14:58. Cote’s Dennis Peepeetch then tied the game for the final time at 12:03. Esterhazy’s Jayden Isaac scored a short-handed goal at 9:22, and then sealed the deal with a final goal at 4:10 to end a highly competitive contest.

Vs. Langenburg

On Nov. 16, the Selects were defeated soundly by the Langenburg Warriors, 10-2 in Langenburg.

The first period started well for Cote, with a goal 29 second in by Kailum Gervais, assisted by Konrad Mckay and Tristan Keshane. Then Evan Werle and Josh Thompson scored for the Warriors.

The second period sealed Langenburg’s dominance over the Selects. They scored five goals, including a power play goal by Rylee Zimmer at 17:00.

Langenburg scored three more goals in the third period. Tristan Keshane of the Selects scored the final goal of the night unassisted at 10:24.
