Local family takes over 8 & 49 Gas Station

Tyson Kabatoff shared insights into their family’s decision to take over the local gas station and their plans for its future.

PELLY — Tyson Kabatoff shared insights into their family’s decision to take over the local gas station and their plans for its future. The family, consisting of: Paul Kabatoff, Annie Kabatoff, Danny Kabatoff, Haylie Kabatoff, Aleah Kabatoff and Tyson Kabatoff is working together to revitalize the gas station and bring additional life to the town of Pelly.

The Kabatoff family assumed ownership of the gas station on July 1, stepping in after the previous owners closed the business. The gas station had been a fixture in the town for years, and the Kabatoffs are keen to ensure its continued operation, recognizing the vital role such establishments play in the survival of small communities.

The Kabatoffs intend to open up a restaurant in the location as soon as possible, aiming to provide a space for both indoor and outdoor dining. However, they acknowledge that there are challenges to overcome, such as obtaining necessary approvals and bringing the facility up to code after its period of closure.

Tyson Kabatoff said, “Everything's been as crazy as you think it would be buying something like this and running the shop as well. So the shop has been pretty busy, but I'd say finding workers would be the biggest challenge right now.”

The Kabatoff family's engagement in the town goes beyond the gas station. They already own the old curling rink, which they have converted into a functional shop. Their varied business interests include a scrap business and a trucking outfit, demonstrating their investment in the local economy.

One of the owners, Annie Kabatoff also added, “An honourable mention goes to our employees Haylie Kabatoff and Aleah Kabatoff. Also, thanks to Doug Kabatoff, Megan Kabatoff, and Bryle Kabatoff. They helped with initial startup and renovations. Kim Scheller will be our head cook when the kitchen opens in October. Brett is our head mechanic and Dalfus is our carpenter. We have also had a few other summer students and casual workers, Avery, Caitlin, Garth, and David, every little bit helps!”
