KAMSACK — The Kamsack Powerhouse Museum opened its doors for the season on May 26, welcoming visitors with a day of sunshine, tours, pies, and live music from artist Rachel Dancsok. The annual event drew a crowd eager to explore the museum and enjoy the festivities.
Marv McKay, the museum board lead, expressed his delight at the event’s success.
"We were a little concerned about the weather, but it's turned out to be a beautiful day, and we're getting a nice turnout. We’re really happy to see the people of Kamsack come out and join us for our opening day," said McKay.
Throughout the summer, the museum has planned a series of events, including tours for local seniors from the Eaglestone Lodge. McKay mentioned that the museum regularly hosts formal tours from out of town and even out of province, often accommodating bus tours with special arrangements.
Looking ahead, the museum plans to hold a larger event at the end of the season, featuring a supper that promises to draw an even bigger crowd. McKay also hinted at a few smaller events designed to engage the community throughout the summer months.
In terms of improvements, the museum is in the early planning stages of a significant renovation project aimed at expanding its space.
"We have a major renovation project in our planning stage. We are short of space, but we have an annex that is not well utilized right now. We’re thinking of renovating that to accommodate more artifacts," McKay explained.
While major renovations are still on the horizon, the museum has completed several projects to enhance visitor experience and safety. Recent upgrades include the construction of ramps on the school exhibit to improve accessibility for seniors and individuals with disabilities, as well as safety rails on the museum’s train caboose to prevent accidents.
Additionally, the museum is planning a window replacement project for its school exhibit, set to begin in June.
