Tavia Laliberte elected Chair of Sask Sport Inc

Tavia Laliberte was elected Chair of Sask Sport Inc.’s Board of Directors today at the sport federation’s annual general meeting in Regina.

Tavia Laliberte was elected Chair of Sask Sport Inc.’s Board of Directors today at the sport federation’s annual general meeting in Regina. Laliberte joined the board in 2014 after being nominated by the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation. She has served on the board as the Vice Chair of the Sport Division and as a member of the Aboriginal Sport Leadership Council. Before joining Sask Sport Inc., Laliberte served on numerous volunteer committees including the North West Regional Intersectoral Committee, and she participated in the 2012 Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference. She is currently the president and chief executive officer of the North West Regional College.

The outgoing Chair is Todd Fuchs, who was nominated to the board in 2013 by Football Saskatchewan. Fuchs has served on the Fund Development, Lottery, Administration Centres and Provincial KidSport Committees. Prior to joining the board, Fuchs served as the President of the University of Regina Rams’ Board of Directors, and played junior football with the Rams from 1990-94. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer at the Brandt Group of Companies in Regina.

The other members elected to Sask Sport Inc.’s Executive were:

Dave Boan, Vice Chair, Sport Division
In 2015-16, Boan served on the Sport Committee, Aboriginal Sport Leadership Council and Provincial KidSport Committee. He was nominated to the board in 2015 by Water Polo Saskatchewan. He was the physical education representative and vice-chair of the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan (CAS), and has been involved with CAS for over 10 years, helping the association develop the Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program.

Cathy Gale, Vice Chair, Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation
Gale was Chair of both the Sport Committee and Sport Funding Committee in 2015-16, while also serving on the Trust and Community Funding Committees. She was nominated to the board by Softball Saskatchewan in 2015. She has coached softball for the last 18 years at the Division 1 Level and has served on the Regina Ringette and Softball Regina Board of Directors. She was also a member of the 2013 Grey Cup planning committee.

Darren Wilcox, Vice Chair, Saskatchewan Lotteries
Wilcox served on the Sport Committee, CSCS Management Committee and Lottery Division Committee in 2015-16. He was nominated to the board by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association in 2015. He has been responsible for fundraising for the University of Regina men’s hockey team, and has served on the board of the University of Regina Cougar Hockey Alumni Association. He has also organized several golf tournaments for the university and the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers.

Garth Belanger, Secretary Treasurer
Belanger was the Chair of the Audit Committee and Administration Centre Advisory Committee in 2015-16, also serving on the Sport Funding Committee. He has served on the board of the Caledonian Curling Club, was the co-chair for advertising and promotions at the 1994 Canadian Junior Championships, and was an official at the 1992 Canadian Labatt Brier. Belanger has been a registered official with Swim Saskatchewan, served on the board of the Piranhas Summer Swim Club, and coached baseball and fastball. Belanger has coached hockey at all levels, from initiation to senior, male/female and house teams to the Tier I level. He was nominated to the board in 2014 by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. Belanger is the Director of Pricing and Services at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Central Services.

New members elected to the board include:

Leslie Blyth, Regina, Saskatchewan Soccer Association
Blyth has been a strong supporter of soccer for almost 20 years. She has been a Saskatchewan Soccer Association board member since 1998, serving as president, vice-president and past president and sitting on many committees. During her time as Chair, she had the opportunity to chair several provincial competitions and serve as the provincial representative for the Canadian Soccer Association National Championships.

Patti Sandison-Cattell, Regina, Skate Canada Saskatchewan
Sandison-Cattell is the wellness co-ordinator for the Regina Police Service (RPS). She is the co-founder of the RPS Half Marathon, now in its ninth year (a sellout in six days), which gives the service a way to promote healthy living to the entire Regina community. Sandison-Cattell is also an experienced marathon runner, having completed that 42.2 kilometre journey in various Canadian and U.S. cities 20 times.

Todd Hollinger, Regina, University of Regina
Hollinger has spent the past five years involved with sports organizations through coaching in Hockey Regina and has participated in the growth of the Cougar Hockey Alumni Association, which raises money for scholarships and brings together members of the business community. This past year, Hollinger volunteered to coach in the Regina Community Basketball League.

Misty Alexander, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Hockey Association
Alexander has been the chair of the KidSport Saskatoon Breakfast Committee and the lead organizer for the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskie Women’s Hockey Alumni. She is also a committee member for the U of S Ice Facility Campaign and has served as a colour commentator for the U of S Huskie Women’s Hockey Team web broadcasts.

Other board members returning this year are: Larry Lafrenz, nominated to the board in 2014 by the Saskatchewan Games Council; Jerry Shoemaker, 2014, Curl Sask; and Vivik Jain, 2015; Tennis Saskatchewan.

Sask Sport Inc. would like to thank the following board members whose terms are completed this year: Brenda Bathgate, Saskatchewan Games Council; Dawn Kobayashi, Softball Saskatchewan; Jeannette Kuc, Saskatchewan Soccer Association; and Jeff Herback, Swim Saskatchewan.
