SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department awarded thirteen students certificates upon completing the eight-week Firefighter Introduction Recruitment Experience Cadet Programme. The simple ceremony occurred on Thursday, June 15, at Fire Station 1.
The ceremony served as a recognition and celebration of the cadets' dedication to serving the community regarding public safety, relationships, and teamwork. The programme, designed to provide high school students with an understanding of firefighting through classroom and hands-on learning, enabled the cadets to develop vital skills.
During the two-month training period, the cadets participated in activities building and enhancing their life skills. Mental and physical wellness were tested as they faced challenges to strengthen their capabilities.
Furthermore, the programme aimed to instill a sense of self-responsibility, personal growth, leadership, teamwork, and fire prevention skills. These skills are intended to contribute to success in all areas of life, including future career opportunities.
Under the guidance of SFD instructors, the cadets participated in various firefighting and emergency services exercises. These exercises included CPR accreditation, vehicle extrication, hose and hydrant operations, and the use of ladders and aerial apparatuses.
The cadets also completed drills in dark room search and rescue, water rescue, and forcible entry. Additionally, they actively engaged in community service-related activities, such as needle and garbage pickup and delivering fire safety presentations to elementary school students.
SFD Chief Morgan Hackl expressed his pleasure working with this year's cadet class, highlighting their commitment to the FIRE Cadet Programme after accumulating over 60 hours of training and community involvement.
"Seeing the student’s personal growth and ability to function as a team has been inspiring. They consistently pushed beyond their comfort zones and excelled in every task they encountered," said Hackl.
The Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and the Saskatoon Public Schools played pivotal roles as partners in the FIRE Cadet Programme.
