The Preeceville School Community Council spearheaded a community garden project that provided a learning opportunity for students.
The organizers were Vereen Primeau, Janeen Covlin, Megan Maier and Kim Sandager. School staff involved were Heidi Paterson and Sarah DeRuiter.
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 were involved in the planting portion on May 31. The plots are located in front of the Preeceville School.
The idea was to provide a natural garden area for the community and provide a learning opportunity for the students, Janeen Covlin said. The garden will be organic and the students will be helping to harvest in the fall with the produce being used in the school to help provide healthy snacks, ingredients for lunch and the Breakfast Café.
The plants used were all donated and featured herbs, flowers, vegetables and root plants.
“We wanted to encourage students to get involved in the planting stage and see where food actually comes from," said Covlin.
