CANORA - The Canora Supers continue to battle for first place atop the Â鶹ÊÓƵeast Senior Baseball League standings.
On June 5, the Supers headed south to Yorkton to take on the Parkland Pirates. The offence was in fine form as they scored in all but one inning in a 13-6 victory.
The bats had struggled earlier in the season, but woke up with 14 hits, including five players with a pair of hits each, according to Greg Andreychuk, player/coach.
“Kody Rock led the way with a triple, single and two stolen bases,” said Andreychuk. “Evan Rostotski had a double, single and two RBI. Brendon Landstad, Riley Stewart, and Jeff Stewart each had a pair of singles. Derek Palagian, Ian Quewezance, Kholton Shewchuk and Colton Hubic all had one hit apiece. Hubic is a call up from the Parkland AA Expos 18U team and made his debut a memorable one.”
The pitching was once again solid as Shewchuk (4 2/3 innings) and Palagian (2 1/3 innings) threw well. Shewchuk picked up the win.
The Supers then extended their winning streak to five on June 9 in Canora when the Langenburg Legends came to town.
“After the Supers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, the Legends put up three runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the game interesting,” said Andreychuk. “But a nine-run bottom-of-the-sixth erased that as the Supers triumphed 14-5.”
Kody Rock started on the hill and cruised through five innings while allowing no runs on three hits and racking up seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Clay Sleeva made his first pitching appearance in two years, and first as a Super, by recording two outs in the top of the sixth. Dylan Toffan closed out the final 1 1/3 inning to record the save as he entered the game with the Supers up by three runs.
The offence was on fire and recorded 17 hits. Rock, Travis Mentanko, and Grady Wolkowski each had a home run. Rock also had two singles to continue his torrid hitting. Nate Wolos, Nathaniel Minhinnick, Clay Sleeva, Kholton Shewchuk and Dylan Toffan all chipped in with two hits each. Ty Sleeva and Derek Palagian each recorded a hit as well.
The game also featured about a ten-minute delay as the sprinkler system was accidentally activated in the top of the sixth inning. Town of Canora staff quickly shut the water off and the game resumed, ending the humorous break in the action.
With the win in the bag, the Supers record improved to 6-1.
