The Canora Composite School junior girls volleyball program has once again attracted high numbers this season.
Assistant Coach Lindsey Ostafie said a total of 33 girls tried out in grades 7 to 9. She and Head Coach Alexandria Blatter have taken on grades 8 and 9 players.
"We created a Travel Team of nine players and a Practice Team of 12 players," said Ostafie. "A Grade 7 team is being coached by two other teachers."
The two older teams are split into a red team and a black team. Each team played two sets against the visiting squad from Norquay on Sept. 27.
The CCS red team met up with Norquay in the first two sets, with the black team taking over in the final two sets. By total score, the Cougars would have been declared the winners. Unfortunately for the home side, Norquay won the first three sets 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22. But the Cougars really found their game in the final set, and won by the score of 25-13.
"Both CCS teams played well and are improving every week," said Ostafie.
Ostafie and Blatter are working with the players on their all-around game as the season progresses.
"We have spent lots of time on passing, serving and making three hits before the ball goes over the net, and on the players being confident to make plays and decisions in the moment during the game."
Ahead on the schedule for the Cougars are several away games as well as conference playoffs.
