CANORA - The Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club hosted the "Ski for the Pot of Gold" skiing event on the afternoon of St Patrick's Day at Good Spirit Provincial Park.
“Skiers were encouraged to dress in St. Patrick's day costume colours to follow the popular Irish traditional celebration,” said Darryl Stevenson, club president.
Sixteen skiers participated in the fun ski including the members of the Jackrabbit junior ski club from Yorkton. The Jackrabbit coach, Joanne Maloff, brought several young junior skiers in training “to enjoy the excellent weather and skiing conditions in the Good Spirit Provincial Park.”
All participants were instructed to collect numbered chips from six bags located on Boundary, Moose, Rabbit, Country, Leeward and Deer trails. These trails require skiers to travel at least six kilometres to find the chip stations.
“Once all six chips are collected they are taken to the ski warmup shelter to register and pay their fee to enter the contest,” said Stevenson.
Chip contest winners were Glenda Nussbaumer of Yorkton, Pot of Gold first prize, and the Pot of Gold second prize went to four-year-old George Derotar of Yorkton
The participants wearing St. Patrick's Day costumes were entered in the best dressed skiers contest to receive a prize. Contest winners were were leprechauns Lauren Mentanko and Valérie Caza of Canora, who won Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club toques.
“The club would like to thank all those who participated in this event which was enjoyed by the enthusiastic cross country skiers,” concluded Stevenson.
