Split moves Supers closer to wrapping up first place

Supers continue road winning streak in Langenburg, but fall at home to Pirates.

CANORA - The Canora Supers recorded a road win and a home loss in recent Â鶹ÊÓƵeast Senior Baseball League action.

The Supers travelled to Langenburg to face the Legends on June 20 with only 10 players, four of whom were seeing their first action with the Supers, according to Greg Andreychuk, player/coach. Newcomers included Hunter Morin and Connor Kovach from Hudson Bay, and 18U call-ups Kimmuel Albarracin and Xage Miraflor of Sturgis, who play for Norquay. Also making his first appearance of the season was long-time Super Carson Dennis who last appeared in a game in 2021.

“With seemingly everybody unavailable on this night, the Supers were in good hands as Kody Rock once again tossed an impressive seven-inning complete game,” said Andreychuk. “Rock allowed just an unearned run and three hits while recording 14 strikeouts to pick up his fifth win of the season with a final score of 4-1.” The offence took a while to get going, but scored three big runs in the top of the fourth. “The inning included hits from Morin, Grady Wolkowski and Brendon Landstad,” said Andreychuk. “Morin and Landstad each had two singles for the game, while Albarracin, Wolkowski, and Kovach each had one hit.”

The next evening, the Supers were back on the home diamond at Al Sapieha Field, with the visiting Parkland Pirates providing the opposition. But the visitors came out on top by a score of 7-2.

Once again another former Super made his return to the lineup, as catcher Matt Wilgosh came back after a five-year hiatus from the team. Also, Logan Wolkowski made his Supers season debut after an injury kept him out of the lineup for the early part of the schedule. “The Supers led 2-1 after an inning, but could not generate anything from then on, as emergency starting pitcher Benny Walchuk silenced the Supers bats to just four hits and four strikeouts,” said Andreychuk. “Wolkowski had two singles. Landstad and Kovach each had one single but nothing else was working on this night.”

Kholton Shewchuk was the losing pitcher. He allowed three earned runs over the first four innings but had a season-high seven strikeouts. Derek Palagian came in relief to finish off the game on the mound. “Unfortunately the defense struggled, committing three errors and prolonging some innings. This will need improvement for the Supers in upcoming games to continue the championship streak,” said Andreychuk. After the split, the Supers record goes to 7-2 on the season. Two more victories in the final three games on the schedule would wrap up first place for the regular season.
