The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 68 calls from Nov. 24 to Dec. 1, some of which included: two 911 Act calls, two assaults, one assault with a weapon, one Controlled Drugs and Substances Act call, one failure to comply with undertaking, two false alarms, one identity theft, one impaired operation, one lost and found, two Mental Health Act calls, three mischiefs, one obtaining food and lodging by fraud, one uttering threats, one suspicious person, one theft, 36 traffic offences, three traffic collisions, one wellbeing check, and six other provincial incidents.
Cheese and cactus thieves
On Nov. 24, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of shoplifting. Two females and a male entered the Canora Co-op Grocery Store and stole a Christmas cactus and package of Gouda cheese. The thieves left in a dark coloured Chevrolet Equinox. Belligerent drunk
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on Nov. 24 to multiple complaints that a male was intoxicated and making threats inside a residence in Canora. Police attended and arrested the male for mischief.
Snow removal is not quiet
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of noise coming from a neighbouring business clearing snow on Nov. 25. Police mediated the complaint and provided education on the Town of Canora Noise Bylaw.
Using drugs around kids
On Nov. 27, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a residence in Canora over reports of children being present in a home while their parents used illicit drugs. Police went to the home with Yorkton Child and Family Services to further investigate the complaint.
Destruction and threats
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Nov. 27 to a report that a male was destroying furniture and making threats inside a residence. Police went to the residence and arrested the male for mischief.
Rollover, potential danger avoided
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of a semi rollover on Highway No. 9 north of Canora, just south of the Amsterdam turn. Police learned a semi truck had driven into the ditch and rolled onto its side to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle during bad weather. The semi was hauling 50,000 litres of diesel fuel. Canora RCMP members and the Canora Fire Department assisted with traffic control while specialized workers pumped out the diesel fuel from the fuel tank trailers. No diesel leaked from the fuel tank trailers as a result of the collision.
Icy collision
On Nov. 29, a vehicle lost control on Norway Road and struck a pole. The vehicle sustained serious damage and had to be towed. No injuries were reported. Roads were snow covered and icy at the time of the collision.
Firearm owners take note
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a request from the Canadian Firearms Program on Nov. 30 to follow up with restricted firearm owners who let their possession acquisition licence expire. If you have let your licence expire or have inherited restricted or prohibited firearms from a family member, please call the Canadian Firearms Program at 1-800-731-4000 or your local RCMP Detachment for assistance.
Home alone
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Dec. 1 to a report that three children were left home alone for five days in Canora. Police went to the residence and found the children alone. Yorkton Child and Family Services were contacted to assist with the investigation.
