RAMA - A Remembrance Day Service took place at The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Rama on Nov. 11 to remember our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
The service began with the singing of "O Canada". Joe Kowalyshyn, flagman, read the names on the cenotaph from our local parishes, mentioning also all others “who gave their lives in service of our country so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today.” Wreaths were laid at the cenotaph by the following:
1) Representing the Government of Canada was Constable Darren Letson of the Canora RCMP Detachment.
2) Louis Swiderski and his grandson, Kashton, honoured the war veterans and in particular, Louis' uncle, Louis Swiderski, who at the age of 28 was killed in battle in 1944.
3) Councillor Donna Pasloski represented the Village of Rama.
4) Elaine Olson represented St. Anthony's Parish.
5) The RM of Invermay was represented by Roger Genoway.
All participants observed a one-minute Moment of Silence and said The Lord's Prayer remembering all those who fought for our freedom.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Rama was originally constructed under the direction of Father Anthony Sylla O.M.I., parish priest at St. Anthony's and architect, who summoned his parishioners on the eve of The Second World War, instructing them to haul their fieldstones so that a grotto be built in order to have a place to pray for peace in the world.
