CANORA - Many residents from Rama and the surrounding area gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine at Rama for the annual Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 11.
It began with a procession from St. Anthony's Church led by Constable Darren Letson of the Canora RCMP Detachment to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes.
All joined in singing O Canada. Joe Kowalyshyn lowered the flag to half-mast and read the names on the cenotaph of the fallen soldiers from the parish while also acknowledging others from the area. A minute of silence followed.
Placing the wreaths were:
1) Constable Darren Letson on behalf of the Government of Canada.
2) Louis Swiderski honoring the war veterans, one of whom was his Uncle Louis Swiderski who never returned from battle.
3) Phillip Shewchuk, mayor of the Village of Rama.
4) Elaine Olson from the St. Anthony's Parish Council.
5) Roger Genoway from the RM of Invermay #305.
Everyone was invited to the Rama Golden Jets Centre for lunch served by the Rama Golden Jet Club members. Grace was led by Marcella Shewchuk and all enjoyed a hot lunch.
A short program commenced with John McCrae's famous In Flanders Field recited by Mary Kowalyshyn and A Soldier's Reply composed by John Zelinski, and read by Christine Dyky.
Words of gratitude concluded the afternoon.
