A Cut Above is a new hair salon in Canora which has been serving area clients since its opening on November 8.
For now, at least, owner/operator Amanda Monich is working by appointment only and reports that “I have been steady busy since the first day. My place on Railway Avenue provides a homey feeling, so when you’re there you can relax and enjoy your service.”
Monich was born in Tisdale, moved to Yorkton with her family at the age of nine and grew up there. After high school graduation she moved to Saskatoon and attended Marvel Beauty School.
“I am a journeyman Cosmetologist which means I am trained to provide service in hair such as cuts, colours, perms, basic barbering, and facial waxing,” explained Monich.
One of the first things that becomes apparent upon meeting her, is that Monich thoroughly enjoys her work.
“My most favourite thing about what I do is making people feel good about themselves and getting to know the clients in my chair,” she said. “I meet many people from all walks of life and it’s great getting to know everyone’s story. On the other hand, the most challenging thing about my job is trying to get everything perfect from the colour, to the cut, to the style. I want my clients to always be happy with the service provided!”
Monich chose Canora as the location for her business because it’s home for the Monich family.
“My husband and I moved here in December 2010. We love the surrounding area and are raising our family here. I have always wanted a place to open a salon and finally found a place that’s great fit for me.”
Even though the business has only been open for a short time, Monich has been thrilled by the support of the community.
“I have been in close contact with our community developer who’s great at keeping businesses involved and I look forward to the town events in the future. I just did a small fundraiser for the winter festival day and made a donation of $150 for our new pool and Monich Farms (family’s farm) decided to match my donation. We have four kids in the community and look forward to using the new facility.”
Since Monich works independently by appointment only at this point, her door isn’t presently open to walk-in traffic, but she’s open to the possibility of changing that in the future.
“I previously did hair in Yorkton for 10 years after I graduated. Then I made hair more of a hobby and took my LPN course to work in health care for the past 11 years, but decided to go back to working for myself where I am truly happy; juggling our busy life with kids, farming and a new business! I look forward to the years ahead providing a valued service in this community,” Monich concluded.
