After previously spending time at CCS as a pre-intern and as a basketball coach, Olivia Gordon is enjoying her first year as a CCS teacher.

CANORA - Olivia Gordon is technically a newcomer in that this is her first year as a teacher at Canora Composite School, but she is quite familiar with the school and the people who make it a unique learning environment.

“I am very lucky to have been in and out of CCS the last two years as I did my pre-internship here and have coached the senior girls basketball team,” said Gordon. “Coming back to CCS was an easy transition with the connections I had previously developed. I am looking forward to my time at CCS.”

Gordon was born and raised in Yorkton, where like many Saskatchewan girls, she enjoyed participating in sports.

“My main interest was hockey as I played competitively for 10-plus years. In addition to hockey, I played basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, badminton, and track and field. I was also heavily involved with SRC during my high school years at the Yorkton Regional High School. I was vice-president of our SRC and co-grad director. These titles allowed me to make many connections and travel within our nation, gaining leadership experience.”

When asked at what point she became interested in teaching, Gordon replied that she could not remember a time when she wasn’t interested in teaching.

“I come from a family of teachers, so I guess you could say it’s in my blood. My dad is a vice- principal at Columbia School in Yorkton and he is my greatest inspiration, role model, and support in my career.”

Gordon attended the University of Regina, earning her bachelor of education degree majoring in English and minoring in inclusive education

“I completed my internship at Sturgis Comprehensive School under co-op teacher Kristen Peterson. I am beyond thankful for my experience at SCS and it has and continues to have an impactful role in who I am as a teacher. After finishing my degree in Dec. 2022, I received a position at Victoria School in Kamsack teaching a Grade 3/4 split class from Jan. 23 to June 28, 2023.”

Just nicely into her first year at CCS, Gordon is teaching ELA (English Language Arts) Grade 9, 20 and 30, as well as History 20 and 30, and Career Education 9.

“As a teacher, I have the privilege of witnessing the growth and development of young minds,” she said. “There is something truly special about being able to guide and support students as they discover their passions and talents. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is the connections I am able to make with my students. Whether we are discussing a particularly challenging text or simply chatting about life outside of school, I am constantly inspired by the unique perspectives and insights that my students bring to the table. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that I am making a difference in their lives and that I am helping to shape the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders."

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Gordon will once again be coaching the CCS senior girls team when basketball season rolls around, “Yes, and so looking forward to it!”
