CANORA - For the past several years, banners have been raised in Canora to show respect to Canora and area veterans who gave so much to serve their country.
The Canora Planning & Development project involving the banners began in 2019, according to Brandi Zavislak, community development officer.
“The veteran banner sponsorship is something that the Town of Canora offers former and current residents to participate in every year.”
A total of six new sponsored banners have been raised for 2023 along Main Street and Norway Road/Highway 9. They went up in early November and will remain there until the end of the month.
Those recognized in the banners served in numerous global and wide-ranging conflicts, including: The First World War, The Second World War, The Korean war, as well as more recent peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Zavislak said former Canora and area residents honoured with the banners are now living as far away as Edmonton.
“This is a reminder of the sacrifices these people have made and continue to make for us,” she said. “It serves as a reminder to the younger generation, and to answers their questions about veterans. This has become a very important representation of honouring those who fought to protect our freedoms we have today. The significance of these sacrifices will always be important to our community and our residents.”
