Districts bring out the best in Canora competitors

A total of seven Canora Composite School runners qualify for cross-country provincials.

CANORA - At the East Central Cross Country District competition near Langenburg on Oct. 11, student/athletes from Canora Composite School took advantage of pleasant fall weather and good running conditions to achieve many personal bests and numerous top-ten finishes, including a first and a third.

As coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen reported, “It was a fantastic day to race. The weather was perfect for our runners and Carlton Trail Regional Park is a beautiful trail for the athletes to run on. We brought home some medals, ribbons, smiles and healthy kids.” 

Kaelyn Shukin won a gold medal in the U15 girls 3km run in a field of seven with a personal best time of 14 minutes even. Danielle Dutchak placed seventh in 18:37.

In the U16 boys 4km race with 10 runners, Andrew Sliva was fourth in 17:47, Ty Lemaigre was right behind in fifth with a time of 18:15. Henry Craig finished seventh in 18:51, and Pierre Rollin’s time of 20:35 was good for 10th.

Jack Craig placed fourth out of eight runners in the Over 16 boys event in a time of 23:16.

In U13 boys 3km action, in a field of 26 runners, William Sliva ran a personal best time of 14:23 to finish 19th, while Reid Kitchen placed 24th in 17:48.

The U13 girls event consisted of a field of 22 runners. Madison Dutchak clocked a personal best time of 16:36 to place 12th, just ahead of Claire Ruf in 13th, who also achieved a personal best with a time of 16:57. Tessa Prychak achieved her best time of the season with 19:40, good for 18th place.

With 32 runners in the U12 boys event, both Canora runners finished with personal best times. Karter Shukin was fifth in 12:31 and Raphael Rollin 27th in 17:52.

Out of 26 competitors in the U12 girls 3km run, Angel Sliva achieved third place in a personal best time of 13:33. In another personal best, Taryn Tratch placed 18th in 17:02, with Maggie Lemaigre close behind in 19th with a time of 17:12.

In the U11 boys 2km run, Drew Kitchen finished 14th out of 35 runners in 9:23, while Camryn Burym was 27th in a time of 10:49.

Competing in a field of 29 runners in the U11 girls 2km race, Hannah Dutchak placed 21st at 11:18, and Talia Collingridge finished 23rd with a time of 11:49.

Logan Menton posted a strong seventh place finish out of 44 runners in the U10 boys 2km race with a time of 9:23. In the U10 girls 2km event, Cora Tomcala ran a time of 13:42, good for 27th place.

Coaches Lowes and Thomas said they are “so proud of this group of kids for all of their hard work and dedication. Cross Country running is not easy and you only have yourself to drive your ambition, and maybe a coach or two cheering you on. It has been a really positive and rewarding season. We are very excited for our seven athletes attending provincials in Regina. We know they will represent CCS and East Central in a very positive way!”
