CANORA - To mark the National Day For Truth and Reconciliation, Canora Composite brought in a GSSD Cultural Coach, Robert Severight, to talk to students and staff. Severight, who is from the Cote First Nation came to school on Sept. 29 to talk about the harsh reality Indigenous people in Canada faced from 1831 to 1996 and continue to face every day. Severight is the son, grandson, and great grandson of residential school survivors and spoke to students and told them they have the ability to make change to ensure that such atrocities do not happen again.
At the end of the speech, staff and students of Canora Composite School joined hands and participated in a round dance.
Due to the upcoming day, students and staff were all asked to wear an orange shirt to show support for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
