COUGAR CORNER HEADLINES: CCS seniors contribute to U18 Pats win

Canora Composite School graduate Clay Sleeva was named the RBC Community Ambassador of the year for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

CANORA - The U18 Preeceville Pats triumphed during an astonishing playoff run, winning the A-banner for the Major Hockey League. The Pats also enjoyed a long and successful run in provincial playoffs, making it all the way to the final before finishing second.

A number of Canora Composite seniors played for the Pats during the season:  Bronson Heshka, Tomas Hauber, Porter Wolkowski, Hunter Lamb, Rhett Ludba, and Briel Beblow. CCS students Cody Vangen and Wyatt Wolkowski from the Highway 9 Predators U15 hockey team were brought in to help.

The team won the A Banner game against Indian Head on March 27. The final score was 2-0 for Preeceville. Fans from Canora Composite packed the arena in Preeceville to watch the team take home the win and to support their fellow CCS representatives.

During the Preeceville Minor Hockey award ceremony on April 1, a number of Canora Composite alumni were handed awards including Grade 12 student Tomas Hauber, who received the Karen Theil memorial award for Best Defenseman. Canora fans were definitely happy with the Canora Composite player’s performance.

Reality show stops in Canora

A British reality show called Race Across The World made a pitstop in Canora during the BBC show's production in June 2022 that filmed completely in Canada. The four remaining teams in the competition show came to town to wait for a ride on a Via Rail train bound for Churchill, Man. However, one team left with a Canora Cougars souvenir. During the show’s stop in Canora, competitors Claudia and Kevin met a family of former and present Canora Composite alumni during a gardening task at the town’s Dairy Bar.

The family decided to give the team a shirt from the Canora Cougars 2020-21 merchandise as a present for stopping by. It may have brought them good luck, because Claudia and Kevin ended up winning the leg of the race in Churchill.

Race Across The World is a British reality show based on the American reality show The Amazing Race in which five teams must navigate across locations where they complete tasks to gain money for ground transportation without cell phones or Internet access. This marks the first time a televised reality show from any country has been filmed in Canora.
