Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dancers excel at Regina festival

Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dancers travelled to Regina to attend and compete in the Tavria Festival, bringing home three gold medals.

CANORA - On March 10-13, the Canora Veselka Dancers travelled to Regina to attend and compete in the Tavria Festival with all dance groups from Junior 1 up to Seniors making the trip.

Veselka President Shannon Unick was among those in Regina, and reported on a very successful event for local dancers, including three gold medal performances.

“It started out Friday morning when Danielle Dutchak performed her Polissia Solo and achieved a silver medal,” said Unick. “The Intermediate 2 group performed Poltava and Volyn and received bronze medals in each dance. Junior 1 showed off their Poltava and received silver, and Transcarpathian brought them a gold medal.”

The Junior 2 group received silver medals for their performances in both the Poltava and the Hutzul. Junior 3 performed a Poltava and Transcarpathian, also attaining silver for both.

“Junior 3 and Intermediate 1 groups joined forces and performed a combined Hutzul and pulled off a silver,” said Unick. “Intermediate 1 performed a number from the Polissia region and received silver and then executed a gold medal performance in Poltava.”

The Senior group performed four dances: Bukovina, Volyn, Transcarpathian, and Hopak; and received silver medals in each dance.

“Veselka took duets to Regina Jack Craig and Meekah Unick, and Joshua Prychak and Maddy Dutchak. Both dances brought home silver medals,” added Unick. “Our Senior girls performed a graceful Roma dance and attained a silver. The boys performed a Cossack Sword Dance and gave the crowd a gold medal performance.”

Unick said the dancers had a fun weekend in Regina. In addition to performing, they also were able to enjoy the performances of other clubs.

The next competition that the club will attend will be in Yorkton, followed by the annual Canora Veslka Ukrainian Dance Concert on May 7.
