Canora runners excel at first cross-country test of the season

At the Deer Park cross-country meet in Yorkton, CCS runners posted personal best times and numerous top ten finishes, including a gold medal.

CANORA - Canora Composite School student athletes had a big day at the Deer Park cross-country meet in Yorkton, posting personal best times and numerous top ten finishes, including a gold medal.

The Good Spirit School Division meet, which is only for student/athletes under 15 years of age, was held Sept. 18.

Kaelyn Shukin won first place out of four runners with a time of 14 minutes, 40 seconds in the U15 girls 3km run.

In the U14 girls 3km event, Danielle Dutchak finished ninth out of 14 runners with a time of 18:29.

A pair of CCS runners competed in the U13 boys 3km class, which included 28 runners. William Sliva was 18th with a time of 15:36, and Reid Kitchen raced to a personal best time of 17:01, good for 22nd.

CCS had three competitors in the U13 girls run out of 17 in total. Madison Dutchak led the way in 11th place in a time of 17:32, Claire Ruf was 14th in 19:30, and Tessa Prychak finished 16th in a time of 21:15.

Out of 48 competitors in the U12 boys 3km race, Karter Shukin finished fourth in a time of 13:27, and Raphael Rollins placed 38th (time unavailable).

In the U12 girls 3km race with a field of 20 runners, Angel Sliva earned third place at 14:29, Taryn Tratch was 11th at 18:17, and Maggie Lemaigre finished 17th (time unavailable).

In the U11 girls 2km competition, Hannah Dutchak came in 13th with a time of 10:11 out of 34 runners, and Talia Collingridge placed 18th in 10:58.

With 58 runners in the U11 boys 2km event, Drew Kitchen placed sixth in 8:11, and Camryn Burym set a personal best time of 10:18 for a finish of 30th.

Logan Mention finished 14th with a time of 8:54 out of a large field of 88 runners in the U10 boys 2km race.

Out of 47 runners competing in U10 girls 2km event, Cora Tomcala placed eighth.

“It was a fantastic day for our CCS runners to have their first race,” reported coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen. “Even though our numbers are smaller this season, we had a very successful day. It was great for our runners to get some times that they can work towards beating when we head to Saltcoats on Sept. 29 for the next cross-country event.”
